Becoming Family: Host Mom Reflects on Experience with Au Pair

Host mom Mina in Maryland recently reached out to describe her experience with the Au Pair in America program. Read on to learn more about what it’s been like for her as a parent working from home alongside her husband, how their au pair has become part of their family, and what the matching process was like for them:

We have had an au pair for 2 years and she has truly been incredible. She is our first, but our next au pair joins us in July. I don’t know what we would do with out her, especially given the current COVID situation, as my husband and I both work full-time at home and we have 2 young children.

Becoming Family

There is no one I trust more than her with the kids (other than my husband… maybe? 😂). She has integrated so well into our family and helps with all kid-related things (caring for them, planning/doing activities, making lunches, snacks, laundry, etc.)…

The situation is not without its bumps (although all child care has that), but its a great option if you are looking for something very reliable, flexible and really getting to know the person who takes care of your children. She has become part of our family and loves our children like they are her own family, even when they are being little monsters.

Finding the Right Match

Finding the right person is key (really take the time to do multiple interviews, read their intro letters and interview notes), but once you do, they can mold their way into your family to provide support you don’t know how you lived without before.

Au Pair vs. Other Child Care

Before having an au pair, my kids have been in daycare (large and small centers) and we have had nanny, so we know how it compares across different options. Having an au pair has by far been the best fit for us… I can’t speak highly enough about our experience!
