FAQs – Your Questions Answered

We love hearing from families who are considering hosting an au pair, and many times the same questions come up again and again. Here are a few common FAQs and their answers, which may be helpful to you as you consider your child care options.

Q: Can an au pair work overnights?

A: An au pair’s working hours must fall within program regulations. Au pairs can work up to 10 hours per day. If an au pair is responsible for the children overnight and the children sleep the whole time, she is still “working,” and that time would count toward her working hours. Au pairs are also required to have at least 1.5 days off per week and one full weekend off (Friday night to Monday morning) per month. Q: What are the options for paying the program fee over a period of time?

A: Au Pair in America offers an Extended Payment Plan, which allows you to pay the program fee in 7 installments spread out over the first 7 months of your au pair’s stay. The first installment is due 30 days before the au pair arrives. For full details of the Extended Payment Plan, including a cost breakdown and payment calendar, click here.

Q: Are we required to offer a car to the au pair during working hours even if she won’t need it during those hours?

A: Your au pair will need access to transportation when she is working. Most of our host families live in suburban areas and will need to provide their au pair with a car. If you live in an urban area with reliable public transportation for your au pair to use with your children, then that would suffice.
